The following is general information about the Contemporary Topics lecture series and some guidelines for speakers contributing to this lecture series. The basic aim of this lecture series is to present a topic of current interest, challenges, industry and research problems, etc. There is also the opportunity to discuss any related issues with some members of staff. The lectures are given by internal and external speakers with various industrial, business and academic backgrounds. The lectures take place early in the autumn term, usually from October to December.

The idea behind these lectures is to enthuse our students and encourage them to be aware of the Big Picture such that they can relate the course and the covered material to the lectures' topic and possible career paths. The students are still in a very early stage of their studies, and the talks are intended to make them aware of interesting topics and problems related to Computer Science and Information Systems and to help them to choose subjects for further study. The emphasis should be on a broad outline of an area of interest, but you may indicate more complex technical issues as far as these can be understood by a first year student.

Besides discussing the topic, you are also welcome to give a brief introduction of your organisation and indicate which specific subjects you look for in a Computer Science and/or Information Systems degree. You may for instance discuss how the topic discussed and your/your companies general background fits into the students' degree, what you would consider interesting subjects for project or group works, which qualifications you recognise, what career opportunities, job prospects, PhD options exist, etc.

We also ask for an electronic copy of your presentation material. We would like to provide this to our students online, either on this web site for general access or restricted to our students via blackboard, with your permission. This can form a starting point for our student to find out more about the discussed topic. For this it is also helpful for our students if you identify key reference material, e.g. web resources, articles, books, on an introductory level. This is in particular relevant to them as each of our students will have to write a short report about a topic related the lectures.

If you are interested in contributing to this lecture series, please contact me with a brief outline of your suggested presentation. I am also happy to discuss any potential topics with you. For previous topics and presentations, please see the programme of current and past presentations.
